Exploring Post-War Economy Through The Graduate And Easy...

The Golden Age of America, the period post WWII, was taken out behind the proverbial house and beaten by the coming of the Counter Culture Revolution of the 1960s. Everything that the â€Å"greatest generation,† built and quite literally defended was thrown to the wind by the next generation without a second thought. They were able to free themselves from the shackles of society so easily for various reasons, including: affluence, leisure time, easy access to literature, and higher education. These topics have been touched upon far too much for me to mention them in my paper, and I will save you the boring read. The real question is, why? Why after being handed everything, why after being groomed for this new world where America was at the†¦show more content†¦Government spending on the war grew huge industries that dried up the unemployment rate very quickly. The climax of this economic boom ironically came with the explosion of the last bomb. The virtually unsca thed American industrial infrastructure rose above the rubble of European factories and Asian offices, and the United States was more than happy to invest heavily in the foreign markets allowing for Hulk like growth in an already thriving national economy. That generation, after a great struggle, became members of a superpower and were responsible for a brand new America. Post WWII Americans owned America, they had made her their own with progressive reforms to both government and economy. Social changes, however, were hard to come by and the younger generation began to feel oppressed by societys harsh limitations. So, in fact the Counter Culture Revolution of the 1960s was started by a teenage hissyfit against their parents. The first blow came to the institution of family. With higher education and a broader choice of a career thanks to new industry the family unit became irrelevant. Children had loose roots and easily forgot where they came from. Family crests were replaced by job titles and their identity became their own. In The Graduate Ben returns from college to a ceremonious welcome. Ben has done it, he has made his parents proud and graduated with honors, but he feels empty.
